Choosing Your Level
Every screen fabric is woven with a specific "openness": how much of the weave is solid thread versus open gaps. That openness is what determines how much UV the fabric blocks, and it's the main tradeoff you're choosing between: tighter weaves block more sun and give more privacy, while more open weaves let in more airflow and a clearer view through.
Listed below are some of the standard UV-ray fabrics we carry, each rated by the percentage of UV it blocks:
Most DFW homeowners land on 95 percent. It blocks the bulk of direct sun and heat while still keeping a usable view and airflow through the screen. West-facing patios that bake all afternoon, or homeowners who want the patio to double as a private room, often step up to 97.
We generally recommend staying away from 99%. At that level the fabric is only 1% open, and you'll lose a lot of the visibility looking out from the inside. The openness between 95% and 97% is negligible, but the difference between 97% and 99% is not: you can still see out of a 97% fabric quite easily, while 99% is noticeably more closed in. These 90–99% tiers are all solar-grade fabric, woven to block heat and UV first. Bugs stay out too.
Our Twitchell products meet the following criteria and industry standards:

A tighter weave, woven from the thicker core yarn, built to block heat and UV first. This is the fabric behind the standard tiers above, strong enough to handle real Texas sun and tight enough to keep bugs out at the same time. We carry Twitchell Nano at 95%, 97%, and 99%, and Phifer SunTex starting at 80%. 80% and up is considered solar-protection grade.

Bug Screen Options
A finer, more open mesh woven from the thinner yarn, engineered to keep insects out while maximizing airflow and visibility. Lower UV block (50–70%) by design. It keeps bugs out, but it isn't built to block heat and sun the way the grade above is.
Why It Lasts
The fabric itself matters as much as the openness rating. We install fabric manufactured by established, name-brand suppliers, not unbranded import mesh, because the coating and weave quality is what determines whether a screen still looks good in year one or year ten.
